Suzan Lamens heeft maandag een indrukwekkend debuut gemaakt in het hoofdschema van Wimbledon. De tennisster uit Berkel en Rodenrijs versloeg de Amerikaanse Iva Jovic in de eerste ronde met overtuigende cijfers: 6-1, 6-1.

“Ik ben hier heel erg blij mee, ook met mijn vertoonde spel. Ik ben trots op mezelf”, reageerde Lamens na afloop bij de NOS. De 24-jarige speelster maakte korte metten met Jovic (WTA-89), die voorafgaand aan het duel nog acht zeges op rij op gras had geboekt.

Toch bleek de ervaring van Lamens, die eerder dit seizoen de kwartfinale bereikte in Rosmalen, doorslaggevend. Met diepe, vlakke slagen en een sterke return dwong ze haar opponent tot fouten. Vooral in de rally’s wist ze Jovic vaak onder druk te zetten.

In de tweede set bood de pas 17-jarige Jovic even weerstand. Bij een 1-1 stand kreeg ze drie breekkansen, maar Lamens hield stand en nam daarna resoluut afstand.

De wedstrijd werd gespeeld onder warme omstandigheden. “Ik was blij dat ik om 11.00 uur moest beginnen en dat de wedstrijd niet lang duurde”, zei Lamens lachend over de hitte in Londen.
