Op verschillende plekken in de regio, waaronder delen van Zoetermeer, zijn de afgelopen dagen opvallend veel dode of verzwakte hommels op straat aangetroffen. Voor veel voorbijgangers roept het vragen op: is er iets mis met het milieu, of is er sprake van vergiftiging?

Volgens entomoloog Aglaia Bouma van Naturalis is er geen reden tot paniek. “Het is een jaarlijks terugkerend fenomeen,” zegt ze. “Rond deze tijd van het jaar raken hommels uitgeput doordat ze massaal op geurige lindebomen afkomen. Daar is vaak niet genoeg nectar voor alle dieren.”

De bomen ruiken voor hommels erg aantrekkelijk, maar leveren niet altijd voldoende voedsel. De insecten raken daardoor verzwakt, vallen op de grond of sterven uiteindelijk van uitputting.

Wie een hommel aantreft die nog leeft, kan proberen deze te helpen met een paar druppels suikerwater. Bouma adviseert ook om de hommel even weg te halen van drukke plekken zoals stoepen of fietspaden, zodat het dier kan bijkomen zonder verder gevaar. “Zodra ze weer op kracht zijn, vliegen ze vaak direct terug richting de boom,” legt ze uit.

Wil je hommels in je eigen tuin een handje helpen? Planten zoals lavendel, vlinderstruiken of zonnebloemen kunnen een goed alternatief bieden voor drukbezochte lindebomen. Daarmee ondersteun je ook de biodiversiteit in de buurt.
