De komende jaarwisseling wordt bijzonder, want het is de laatste keer dat inwoners zelf vuurwerk mogen afsteken voordat in 2026 het landelijke verbod ingaat. De gemeente bereidt zich voor met extra veiligheidsmaatregelen, cameratoezicht en alternatieve feestactiviteiten.

Net als eerdere jaren zijn het Balijbos, het Buytenpark, de Markt en omgeving en het terrein rond het SilverDome vuurwerkvrij. Volgens het college is dit, zoals het er nu naar uitziet, de laatste jaarwisseling waarop vuurwerk nog is toegestaan.

Na eerdere incidenten rond scholen en winkelcentra wordt het cameratoezicht uitgebreid van 1 december 2025 tot 1 februari 2026. Camera’s hangen onder meer bij Het Plankier / De Elzenhoek in De Leyens, bij kindercentrum De Toverberg in Meerzicht en bij winkelcentrum De Leyens. De politie kan bovendien tijdelijk extra camera’s inzetten op risicolocaties.

Om jongeren een alternatief te bieden organiseert de gemeente opnieuw het populaire nieuwjaarsfeest in het SilverDome, waar zo’n 2.500 jongeren het nieuwe jaar inluiden. Op de Markt zijn twee lasershows: een kinderversie in de vroege avond en een spectaculaire show rond middernacht.
