Zoetermeer is een jonge stad met oog voor haar eigen identiteit. Daarom wordt er zorgvuldig omgegaan met bijzondere elementen uit het verleden, zoals het unieke straatmeubilair dat begin deze eeuw speciaal voor het Stadshart werd ontworpen. In de Cultuurvisie 2030 heeft de gemeenteraad vastgelegd dat dit karakteristieke meubilair niet verloren mag gaan, maar juist behouden, gerenoveerd en opnieuw geplaatst moet worden in de stad.

De eerste herplaatsingen zijn inmiddels een feit. Zes originele plantenpotten staan weer in het Stadshart, en bij de jeu de boulesbaan op het Nicolaasplein zijn vijf zitelementen teruggeplaatst. Deze banken zijn gemaakt van geolied eikenhout, staal en gegoten aluminium. Materialen die passen bij het oorspronkelijke ontwerp.

Het straatmeubilair werd in 2003 ontwikkeld door het ingenieursbureau van de gemeente in samenwerking met IPV Delft. Het ontwerp sloot aan bij het thema ‘huiselijkheid’ en bestond uit allerlei elementen, van banken, stoelen en plantenpotten tot afvalbakken, terrasschermen, borden en opvallende lampenkappen. Veel inwoners herkennen deze meubels nog van vroeger en waarderen het dat ze nu weer terugkeren in het straatbeeld.
