Vandaag vond de rechtszaak plaats waarin de gemeente Zoetermeer zich moet verantwoorden voor haar rol in de Sterigenics-zaak. Het Openbaar Ministerie (OM) eist een geldboete van €100.000,- en verwijt de gemeente nalatigheid bij het toezicht op de uitstoot van giftige stoffen door Sterigenics. Volgens het OM heeft de gemeente concrete signalen gemist en onvoldoende gehandeld, ondanks forse overschrijdingen van milieunormen en defecten aan essentiële apparatuur.

De gemeente pleit voor vrijspraak en ontkent opzettelijk verkeerd handelen. Er is ook kritiek op de timing van het OM, met de gemeente die stelt dat de zaak niet langer actueel relevant is. De rechtbank heeft echter besloten om de zaak inhoudelijk te behandelen. De uitspraak wordt verwacht op 2 juli.
