Morgenochtend dinsdag 18 juni gaat het Openbaar Ministerie (OM) in hoger beroep tegen de gemeente Zoetermeer in de zaak rondom het Amerikaanse bedrijf Sterigenics. Tussen 2004 en 2009 werd een filter op de naverbrandingsinstallatie niet vervangen, waardoor een te hoge concentratie van het kankerverwekkende ethyleenoxide via de noodpijp werd verspreid. Het bedrijf verliet later met een forse premie de stad, en onderhandelde in het geheim met het OM over de afhandeling. Pas in februari 2018 is de zaak voor Sterigenics afgehandeld voor de haagse rechtbank, waarom het OM nog 5 jaar gewacht heeft het hoger beroep tegen de gemeente Zoetermeer is vooralsnog onbekend.
